(openPR) The Rencontres Musicales d'Évian, created in 1976 on the initiative of Antoine Riboud, at that time CEO of BSN (to later become the Danone Group) and directed for many years by Mstislav Rostropovich, was revived in 2014 with the Modigliani Quartet entrusted with the festival's artistic direction.
This year's chosen theme focuses on German romanticism. "This year's festival sees the birth of major projects: the residence of Evgeny Kissin, as a performer and composer, and our work alongside him; the presence of Gustavo Dudamel who will conduct the Mahler Chamber Orchestra; the collaboration for the first time between the Bavarian radio choir and two leading pianists, Nicholas Angelich and Martin Helmchen, who will perform a stunning German requiem. But it is also the opportunity to mingle the generations, with performers such as Guillaume Sutre, Gérard Caussé, Julia Hagen and Jean-Frederic Neuburger, who will come together for a Brahm's piano quartet, the chance to see the talents of today and tomorrow on stage together: Elina Buksha will meet Aurélien Pascal for Schubert's 2nd trio, Chad Hoopes will meet Pablo Fernandez for the one composed by Brahms..." confides the Modigliani Quartet.
This year we are celebrating Mstislav Rostropovich's 90th birthday. Slava enjoyed true friendship with Antoine Riboud, who "offered" him the unique Grange au Lac auditorium, the festival's main venue. We pay tribute to him with a concert that will feature the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the young and talented Edgar Moreau and the incredible Gustavo Dudamel, with a cello concerto by Shostakovich and Beethoven's 7th symphony.
Warner Classics is also celebrating the most famous cellist of the 20th century with a won-derful box set, a tribute to an outstanding musician and a man who made his mark on his century.
Finally, we will be symbolizing the ties between the town of Evian and its water spring, by bringing water and music together. The Modigliani Quartet will open the festival with music by Schumann, inviting the audience to follow evian water's journey, from where it penetrates into the ground on the Gavot plateau to the Grange au Lac, which was literally built on top of it.
