(openPR) LifeKeeper for Windows version 5 offers multi-node Exchange cluster configurations, new administration options for data replication and LifeKeeper Extender for protection of any application
Palo Alto, CA - 2nd June, 2005 – SteelEye Technology® Inc., the leading innovator in data and application availability management solutions for Linux and Windows, today announced the general availability of LifeKeeper™ for Windows® version 5 along with a new release of LifeKeeper for Exchange® which together offer expanded support for clustering Microsoft Exchange servers, enhanced manageability for data replication environments and the introduction of LifeKeeper Extender for Windows.
“LifeKeeper for Windows v5 and the new LifeKeeper for Exchange solution meet the needs of businesses that increasingly rely on the functionality of Microsoft Exchange and desire to build configurations which eliminate the cost associated with either planned or unplanned outages. This release also provides significant additional functionality including new capabilities for remote data access and administration,” said SteelEye’s Vice President of Products, Bob Williamson. “Along with our recent release of LifeKeeper for Linux version 5, we continue to focus on expanding the environments into which LifeKeeper can be used to meet customers’ data and application availability needs.”
LifeKeeper for Exchange provides a new layer of protection with support for the building of multi-node Exchange clusters across either a LAN or WAN in “Many-to-One” or “Cascading Failover” configurations. In Many-to-One, a single server acts as the backup for several active Exchange servers. Should any of the active Exchange systems experience a problem, LifeKeeper will automatically redirect the client connections to Exchange running on the backup server. This eliminates the need to dedicate a backup server for every active Exchange system and greatly reduces the cost of deployment.
In Cascading Failover, LifeKeeper provides Exchange protection across a number of systems in a variety of configurations. Using recovery policies defined during installation, LifeKeeper will cascade through a set of backup servers until it can bring Exchange into operation. This allows the building of mixed LAN/WAN clusters with backup systems on a LAN having the highest priority and systems across a WAN link having lower priority. If some event renders all systems within the LAN unable to bring Exchange into service, LifeKeeper will then recover onto systems across the WAN link, thereby providing the ultimate protection by combining local High Availability clustering with Wide-Area Disaster Recovery.
"The addition of multi-node Exchange configurations with Many-to-One and
Cascading Failover support sets LifeKeeper apart in its ability to meet
the needs of more sophisticated IT environments. Supporting greater
than two node Exchange clusters lets us build more complex solutions
while lowering the cost of deployment; no longer are we required to
deploy a backup system to protect each active Exchange server. With the Cascading Failover feature, we can build clusters which integrate local LAN failover with WAN disaster recovery protection, giving the highest levels of protection against more types of failure conditions,” said Garry Sheriff, Managing Director of IT Professional Services, a leading technology integrator based in the UK. “Our customers will directly benefit from these LifeKeeper product enhancements."
The new LifeKeeper management console allows single-click read-access to target volumes. Through this interface, users can pause data replication, access the remote mirror and then resume the mirror allowing users to access the mirrored data to take backups to tape (implementing a disk-to-disk-to-tape backup solution), to run reports or to do a quick restore of files all without impacting the production server. Real-time continuous replication is now joined by real-time continuous access.
LifeKeeper Extender delivers the tools and information needed to quickly and easily place any application under LifeKeeper protection. Following the outlined steps and using examples as guides, extending LifeKeeper using Perl or Visual Basic scripts to protect all mission critical software within a company’s IT infrastructure it is a simple process.
